Folks happy with Debian on PPP?

Postby vfulco » Fri Apr 13, 2012 6:42 pm

After running device for a number of weeks with Arch mod with no external USB hard drives, added auto-mount command, fired up an HD and no access. Rebooted with external HD off and I am back to the blinking and shut down cycle I had when I first got the device about 1 month ago. Since I am much more comfy in debian/ubuntu world, is it an easy switch to do? Would love to hear observations. TIA, V.

The platform suffers the same issue, no matter what, TBH.

True, I've not used debian, but they use our kernel & modules.

I have 2 PPPros, one runs ALARM, one runs Debian. The Debian installation instruction is at http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,6336.

IMHO, the bottom line is if you tend to upgrade your system often, then stay with ALARM. If the box is used for something that does not need to be upgraded, if ever, then there is no problem running Debian with WarheadsSE kernel for ALARM. You can install new Debian packages, but upgrading is a problem sometime because of the mismatch of kernel version.

Even if you don't update often, you can use alarm too, as long as when you do update, you may need some extra time for troubleshooting, most of the upgrade problem is already stated in the wiki / forum :P .

When i was using debian, i always need to backup my kernel and restore manually after doing upgrade, i don't know if it is still true in debian, but alarm handles this quite well.

Actually I rarely have problem with Debian upgrade. I meant the problem with upgrading here is when we use a "hybrid" approach to run Debian rootfs with ALARM kernel :) Because the versions have to stay in sync relatively, i.e. both 2.6.x or both 3.x.x
