HELP: Configure Brother MFC-6800 Scanner in SANE Pogoplug Pr

Postby bear820301 » Wed Aug 22, 2012 2:56 am

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post in the forum and I am a newbie for Linux. So please be specific about the command lines if you have suggestion for my problem. :D

I flashed Arch Linux Arm on my Pogoplug Pro device following the instructions on archlinuxarm.org and had no problems. My main goal is to use the hacked pogoplug as a scanner server for our home. I had a brother MFC-6800 printer/scanner combo.

So I installed sane first using "pacman -S sane".

Then I followed the instruction here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Brother_MFC-420CN.

The instruction above is for a different Brother scanner but the methodology applies to my scanner. I just need to use the right driver for my scanner. Also, since I do not plan to use the printing function, so I skipped the printer setup part of the instruction, except for installing "rpmextract".

Then I jumped directly to the scanner setup section and followed along. My scanner is MFC-6800 so I downloaded the driver "brscane 32bit" from brother website" http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_scn.html. Everything else I just did what the instruction says.

After all of the above, I ran the command "sane-find_scanner" and I got the following:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
# Also you need support for SCSI Generic (sg) in your operating system.
# If using Linux, try "modprobe sg".

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04f9, product=0x0111) at libusb:001:004
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

# Not checking for parallel port scanners.

# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
')

That means the scanner was found. Then I ran the scanner test command "scanimage -L". And I got:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
')

It looks like I did not get the driver installed correctly. Can you provide some insight to troubleshoot this situation? Any suggestion is appreciated.

Aside from my own experiences with Brother printers on arm, as soon as I saw "brscane 32bit" I knew the answer.
They only cater for x86 computers.

It's an old model, I have seen articles and reviews going back to 2001, maybe older

To pepedog,

So you mean the 32 bit driver is not for Arch Linux Arm? I though ARM processors are 32 bit......

I think the 64 bit version isn't right either.

Do you know wher I can find the right driver for my MFC- 6800? then?

Thanks a lot!
