Noob needs help installing gui on pogoplug

Postby yoda313 » Sun Jan 06, 2013 2:57 pm

Hello,

I installed archlinux on my pogoplug pro last night. I tried minidlna to watch videos on my android tablet (no-name unit). It did load apparently but I'm a linux noob and made some changes to config file and it stopped working. So I uninstalled it and I think I reinstalled (I've been loading a lot of programs so I don't remember for sure).

Basically I would like to load a gui so I can browse through the system folders and be able to see in a directory form what programs I have loaded.

I got pacman xpress and that x11 deal on one of those links for guis for pogoplug but I can't find that link right now.

Basically I need a tutorial on how to change directories in archlinux in order to load the gui once its installed.

My main goal is to load a media server onto the pogoplug that will allow me to stream mkv video files to my android tablet (it will play mkv h264 files natively on a sd card on the tablet but the original pogoplug (pro model) won't allow streaming of mkv files of which I have a rather large collection).

I believe I am nearly there but as this is a new environment to me there are basics that I am not familiar with.

My experience is solely windows and dos (going back as far as dos 5.0). I am using the PUTTY program to ssh into the pogoplug fyi.

Thank you for your advice and assistance.

Edit - please feel free to move this to a pogoplug specific forum if you need to - sorry for not checking that first.

Also I think my questions are too basic to have a detailed thread on. I have been searching google proper but I have just joined this forum so if there are super beginner threads that would help please point them out. Thank you.

pacman -Q will tell you what you have loaded. You can use SCP or sshfs to mount/edit files as if they were attached to your windows computer. Running a GUI on a device never meant in any way to have a GUI is 1) complicated 2) a lot of overhead.

Thank you for that response.

Now I can confirm what I do have installed. I appreciate that.

I like that it also gives the version number which can be useful.

I'll have to do more research at another time on scp or sshfs to get a feel for that.

I appreciate the assistance.
