I tried again, as below (after wget the distro and tar,,,).
Still get the "Access Denied" when trying to log-in as root with root password.

I'll try another flash stick....

root@xubuntu:/media/xubuntu/rootfs# sync
root@xubuntu:/media/xubuntu/rootfs# cd /
root@xubuntu:/# umount /media/xubuntu/rootfs
root@xubuntu:/# ssh root@192.168.1.105

Problem Solved. It appears to be the flash stick. I followed the identical install process on another 8GB stick. THis time, a Sandisk...and it worked perfectly, following the identical process.

Thanks all for the help. MUCH appreciated!

Now...I just have to research how to install ftp server and samba and I'm golden! :-)

OB.

No need to reinstall and lose all your settings/modifications.

Take the media that has your arch installation and plug it into a box where you have root access. Open /etc/shadow on the host machine and copy the hash of a login to which you know the password.

Open /etc/shadow on your guest media and replace root's hash with the copied one from your host machine. Now you know your root password on the pogo.

edit: oops, i didn't see the second page haha
