Does formatting ext3 give less space than NTFS or FAT32?

Postby yazyazoo » Sun Mar 10, 2013 4:44 am

I am a Noob at linux. I was trying to figure out how to use a NTFS drive for the Pogo/Samba. However it seems as if NTFS drives can't be booted with the USB OS stick stuck in the Pogoplug. So I wanted to switch to ext3 format which should let everything boot with the USB stick stuck.

I formatted my 1.5tb external hard drive with Gparted in ext3. I mapped the drive and noticed I lost some space compared to my drive whe it was formatted in NTFS. I want to say the NTFS gave me about 1.4TB and ext3 1.3TB. Is the smaller space from journaling?

Thanks
