pygame draws as root only

using text mode (e.g. no x system) the pygame package can draw graphics only as root user.
if logged in as another user, no image will appear.

could that be related to the crashing of the script if launched as a service?

any hints?

Add the user to the video group?

the user is part of the video group (as well as the root group) without much success

i guess a service is launched as root as well (if not stated otherwise) ?
