Unable to login from serial console on dockstar

Before I upgraded and rebooted I was able to login as root via ssh, but could not via the serial console.
I went and rebooted after upgrading the system and now cannot get back on.
The network is not running because it is now getting the error:
[FAILED] Failed to start dhcpcd on eth0.
See 'systemctl status dhcpcd@eth0.service' for details.

What would prevent me from logging in from the console with correct credentials? I am able to mount the drive on another system so what can I do to the file system so that I don't have to login on serial console and check out why dhcpd is failing?

P.S. I have 2 dockstars and 1 pogo4 system running and updated them today and all of them have failed to return to service. I am not going through each one to see why. This one is just the first to get back up and running.
