Gibberish in Linux console TUIs

Postby mehdix » Sat Apr 05, 2025 12:12 pm

Hi there,

First timer, searched the forum, didn't find a similar question.

I have installed archlinux arm on Pinebook Pro. It works great.

My Linux console however, shows gibberish characters in nmtui and other places.
I have attached a picture.

I also have Manjaro which works correctly. Sofar I have:
compared the kernel cmdlines and both are similar (in extlinux.conf)
tried manjaro's cmdline to no avail
compared hooks in mkinitcpio.conf and both were similar
Tried setting nomodeset and got blankscreen.
checked for fbcon module, not existent (forgive my lack of understanding about the graphics hardware on this machine)
tried setting a different console font with setfint to no avail
tried changing keyboard mode with kbd_set to no avail

At this point I'm lost. Would appreciate any help how to fix the problem.

Thanks.

I found a workaround.

Running echo -e '\033%G' in the console allows the
box characters to be displayed correctly. Even though
this fixes the immediate issue, I don't consider it a
solution, and won't mark the issue as solved.

Also the issue is printing border box characters and
could be tested easily:
echo -e "\u2502 \u2500 \u2551 \u2550"
should produce:
| - || =
which in my case produces garbage.

The box characters can be shown appropriately by running echo -e '\033%G' on the console. Although this resolves the immediate problem, I don't think it's a answer, and will not mark the problem as resolved.
