Future compatibility with Linux 3.4

Postby mard » Fri May 20, 2016 7:11 pm

For how much longer Arch Linux ARM will work with Linux 3.4 kernel?

Arch Linux ARM is my distribution of choice and I wish to use kernel 3.4 with it for as long as possible. Linux-sunxi 3.4 provides all multimedia features on my tablet, which unfortunately is not the case with mainline v4+ kernels.

As far as I understand it, libc maintainers can't drop support for kernel 3.4 headers until this kernel loses its support. According to this website, Linux 3.4 EOL is projected for September 2016. Some time in the future, Arch maintainers will naturally pull updated glibc for upstream, and I imagine it will cause my system to gradually fall apart as more and more packages would get updated with API calls not supported by my kernel. I'm not sure if I understand it correctly and I was unable to find such information, so please feel free to confirm or dispel my worries.
