SSMTP not working after GMAIL password change

I've had SSMTP working for almost a year now with no issues. I recently changed my Gmail password so I updated my ssmtp.conf file with the new password; however I am getting the following error:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
ssmtp: Cannot open smtp.gmail.com:587')
I read through this thread and several other threads but none of the suggestions worked.

I am using Linux 3.8.13 armv7l GNU/Linux.

ssmtp.conf:

UseSTARTTLS=YES
root=XXXX@gmail.com
mailhub=smtp.gmail.com:587
AuthUser=XXXX@gmail.com
AuthPass=XXXX
rewriteDomain=gmail.com

I am able to connect to gmail fine with netcat:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'root@mycomputer:~# nc smtp.gmail.com 587
220 smtp.gmail.com ESMTP y194sm15326510iod.17 - gsmtp')
Again, this has been working the only thing I updated was my gmail password. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't know if this somehow got triggered to disabled by changing your password, but try allowing "less secure apps" in your gmail https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255
