Are you trying to start LXDE over an SSH session?

yes, over ssh only because its easier and a bigger screen. I can use the direct terminal on the rpi and smaller screen. i guess i need to use the rpi term instead ? i think i tried that and it didnt work either. ill try it again. do i need to be root user or alarm user ? do i need sudo or not ? thanks.

I just tried "startx" directly on the rpi terminal using both alarm and root user with and without sudo. looks like i need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for the video card / driver. how to do that ? thanks

By `directly on the terminal`, do you mean over the serial?

Xorg is designed to be used from a VTY (keyboard, mouse, etc), not over a serial terminal or ssh session.

Xorg _will_not_ provide graphics over an SSH session, but will provide output on the HDMI port on the device itself.

ok. this is where I am , I was able to install arch arm and boot the rpi to a login prompt. I have been using the ssh because I thought i saw something online about using it to configure arch. i guess i dont need the ssh ? so, to install lxde i work on the rpi terminal only. question: should i be logged in as root or alarm ? use sudo or not ? ive been looking at many tutorials on how to install lxde and i dont know if i am close or not. can you step me through the exact steps to install lxde from the rpi ? i can reinstall the arch arm image again if i need to start from scratch. thanks

The biggest thing is that you need to attach a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the Pi, then login as alarm, and run startx.
