Bluetooth LE scan (iBeacons)

Since hcitool is no longer a part of bluez-utils, how do you scan for beacons, which are using iBeacon protocol?
With hcitool, one would simply run
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'hcitool lescan')

Now, you may use bluetoothctl and use scan command. It does find other "normal" Bluetooth devices, but not beacons.

How to scan for the beacons, since the hcitool is not available and bluetoothctl does not find them using scan command?
