Noob w/ Chromebook wants GUI and apps

Postby DiegoHemken » Mon Mar 12, 2018 12:15 am

Hi. I have virtually zero experience with coding. But I wanted to put linux on my new chromebook so that I could use GIMP and some other free photo editing software. So I installed archlinuxARM by following the instructions on this page:

https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv ... ebook-plus

Now I can boot into either OS. But when I boot into archlinux, it takes me to a black screen that I can type commands into. I want a Graphical User Interface where I can use the free software I was accustomed to on my previous laptop which was Ubuntu. I am practically illiterate in the world of software, I hardly understand the things I'm saying here. My dad uses linux at work and he suggested I ask if what I installed came with a GUI or if I should download something like xfce. He also said to ask what "pacman" command to use to download applications like GIMP. Generally, can I run the applications I used to run on Ubuntu (GIMP, Darktable, UFRaw, Raw Therapee, Geeqie) on my chromebook with archlinux?

Thank you,
- Diego

XFCE is a decent choice for a chromebook: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce

Here are some useful links about using Pacman:
