Debian user thinking of switching to Arch!!

Postby mariogomes » Sun Jun 09, 2019 6:24 pm

Hey there

So I have been a long time Debian user but lately I've been needing software more up to date. Debian Sid provides that somehow but with 2 problems:

1)Sid doesn't get that updated when testing is on full freeze to become the next stable since devs are focusing their attention on having testing read to ship as stable

2)Sid isn't exactly a priority, at all, for Debian. It's the testing grounds and you can use it fine for desktop usage and even work but there's distros that are specifically built to run as rolling releaseshttps://redtube.onl/ https://beeg.onl/ https://spanktube.vip/spankbang/

So I'm thinking of Arch. I've installed it a couple times on a virtual machine just to see what it was about. Aside from having to manually enable some stuff that gets automated in Debian, it's basically the same but with fresh programs and the AUR.

Some of my doubts are:

If I want something from the AUR, is yay the safest/most robust way to install AUR packages? Or should I go with no AUR helper?

I've heard arch sometimes tries to merge things in /etc/(new config files/different files) when updating programs at certain times. I believe you can manage that with the .pacnew files, choosing to either keep, merge, or replace the former config file of x program in /etc/?

Some people say to update asap, others claim once per week is enough. Maybe a middle ground of that(2 days per week) would be the best solution?
