RPi3 HDD issues

Postby roytje88 » Sun Aug 11, 2019 7:34 am

Hi all,

For the last couple of years I have been using ArchLinuxARM with my RPis. However, I've encountered some issues with my external HDD about a week ago. I suspect it was after doing a full system update.

Whenever I try to read/write something to my external HDD the HDD would disconnect and said something about an input/output error.

My setup is:
- RPi3b (original PSU)
- Seagate external HDD (4TB)
- USB hub (externally powered)
- 64Gb SDcard
- Clean install of RPi2 (armv7h)

So far I've come to the conclusion it must be a software problem.

What I've tried:
- another USB Hub (also separately powered)
- another external HDD
- another SDCard
- another RPi3b

All with same results: when I even try to edit a simple bash script it fails, throwing an I/O error.

As a test I've installed Raspbian Lite and tried to copy a large file (about 3.5Gb) and it succeeded very well.
Only thing left is a fault in the firmware update I received.

Can someone confirm this?

Hi there,

I can confirm this. Since one week or two I did a full system update and my SDD is not working properly anymore with my RPi3. I get messages of this type in the journal:

kernel: print_req_error: I/O error, dev sda, sector 109316128
kernel: usb 1-1.4: reset high-speed USB device number 4 using dwc_otg
kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] tag#0 UNKNOWN(0x2003) Result: hostbyte=0x07 driverbyte=0x00
kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] tag#0 CDB: opcode=0x28 28 00 06 84 08 20 00 00 08 00

Mouting the SSD drive on another operating system I can access the data without problems.

cheers,
xrs

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Today I installed the AARCH64-version and it's working perfectly. I'd prefer the 32-bit version because it's better supported, but this'll do for now.

@xrs, maybe this could work for you.

Hi roytje88,

thanks for the advice, I didn't know about this difference. Do you know if maintainers are reading this posts? ^^

Best,

The 64bit version has a different kernel I presume. That's why it works.

I don't know if any maintainers are reading this. Any advice on where to post this?

EDIT: found a post already confirming this with the newest kernels: viewtopic.php?f=60&t=13821

Almost in the top 5, so I feel a bit silly. Could've spared me a week of frustration ;)
