Unable to boot from new Raspberry Pi 4 AArch64 image

Postby aofei » Wed Aug 12, 2020 2:40 am

I'm so glad to see the official support for Raspberry Pi 4 AArch64: http://os.archlinuxarm.org/os/ArchLinuxARM-rpi-aarch64-latest.tar.gz. But unfortunately it doesn't work as expected for me.

My setup:

- Raspberry Pi 4B (8GB RAM)
- micro-SD card for "/boot"
- SSD for "/"
- Modified "/boot/boot.txt" (root=UUID=<ssd-device-uuid>)

This is just my usual setup. They can work well in the image of moonman (with a slightly different change): https://olegtown.pw/Public/ArchLinuxArm/RPi4/rootfs/.

I wonder if it's caused by the new U-Boot? In fact, the power indicator of my SSD doesn't even light up. It seems that the board isn't supplying power to the USB ports.

I am having the same issue, please let me know if you happen to find a solution, I have not yet. I believe it is caused by U-boot as well. I am just using the SD card for now. I wonder if U-boot has recently received an update and we could mitigate the issue temporarily by rolling it back.

aofei, We were able to find the workaround for this issue. If you add pcie_brcmstb to your modules in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, and rebuild your intrid image, you will be able to boot with your SSD. There is also the RC for u-boot you can build that fixes USB at the u-boot level, however if you are using the SD card as your boot device just adding the module is sufficient. You can check my thread if you are interested in the RC for uboot, lightirius has provided some details on building it.
