Assist with Native Install on Acer Iconia B1-7A0

Postby GVPLE » Tue Nov 09, 2021 2:22 am

Hi everybody, absolute novice here (sorry in advance for any dumb questions).

As the title suggests, I am attempting a native install of Arch ARM on my Iconia B1-7A0-K07X's eMMC. I am very well versed in Windows OS deployment & fairly good with C#, however Linux has been all but easy for me to wrap my head around & quite overwhelming so far. My Windows-minded approach was to just write an image to my micro SD card & launch some kind of installer, but that too is far more different than what I'd thought.

I should clarify, none of the data on my device is important to me. In fact, I got it for free, so I really couldn't care if we bricked it even from doing some fancy experimental stuff with it. Just thought it'd be so much more functional/cooler if it were running Arch & also assist me with becoming more comfortable with a Linux environment.

From what I've researched so far, these are the facts that I've gathered:

- My Iconia's CPU is MediaTek MT8167B (ARMv8 Cortex-A53)
- My Iconia's OS is Android 7.0 (Nougat), Kernel v4.4.22
- Acer hosts an original system image here: https://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/OS/OS/OS_Acer_RV01RC01.WW.GEN1_A70N_A.zip?acerid=636469312382918767&Step1=TABLET&Step2=ICONIA%20ONE%207&Step3=B1-7A0&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=AAP_5
- Since Android actually uses a Linux Kernel itself &, from what I've read, the Linux Kernel contains the system drivers, it has me curious if I could somehow extract the Kernel from Acer's provided image so that Arch would have most drivers for my device out-of-box since I have to provide a Kernel anyway.
- I must root my device to make this possible (will do on weekend).
- I must modify the bootloader in some way to point to the Arch install.
- I must use the Arch image "ARMv8 AArch64 Multi-platform", since my device does not have a specific image available.

Which leads me to my questions:
- Where do I start?
- How to implement/execute a "Linux Install" on my device?

Thank-you so much for your time & effort.
