Netatalk slow transfer speed

Postby krakonos » Sun Aug 28, 2011 12:45 am

I installed netatalk and avahi to my PogoPlug Pro to access my files stored on USB external hard drive formatted to EXT3. I don't use time machine configuration right now, just file sharing.

Everything works fine except of the transfer speed. To transfer 5GB file from PogoPlug to Mac Mini (Snow Leopard) takes approx. 1 hour. To transfer same file from the same external HD connected to PC with Ubuntu 11.04 to Mac Mini takes approx. 8 minutes, which is 7 times faster.

All devices are wired to router, not wireless. Ports are 100Mbps.

What is your typical netatalk transfer speed? Could someone please point me to direction what to change or check to get at least comparable speed?

My current setting in PogoPlug is (similar to Ubuntu settings):
In the config file /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default:
/media/test "Test" cnidscheme:dbd options:upriv,usedots (I have also tried cnidscheme:cbd option)

/etc/netatalk/afpd.conf
- -tcp -noddp -uamlist uams_dhx.so,uams_dhx2.so -nosavepassword

/etc/netatalk/netatalk.conf
CNID_METAD_RUN=yes
AFPD_RUN=yes
ATALKD_RUN=no
PAPD_RUN=no
TIMELORD_RUN=no
A2BOOT_RUN=no

/etc/nsswitch.conf
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

/etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(set-oxnas-mac !hwclock syslog-ng network netfs crond sshd openntpd dbus cnid avahi-daemon afpd)

Ok:
USB 480Mbps, LAN 100Mbps (4.8x faster, before overhead or bottlenecks)

I don't use netatalk, or afp, or avahi, but the speeds I get via samba to Ext3 are around the forums. (~15MB/s to usb target)

Were you able to improve speeds?
