[Solved] Apparent DNS error. Pogoplug (gray)

Postby kurofuneparry » Wed Sep 14, 2011 11:31 pm

I recently setup by Pogoplug ARMv5 (gray) with a fresh install. It's behind a Netgear WGT624v4 with a basically default setup. The first problem I noticed was with pacman producing the following error:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')root/]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from Arch Linux ARM.com : No address record
error: failed to update core (No address record)
error: failed retrieving file 'extra.db' from Arch Linux ARM.com : No address record
error: failed to update extra (No address record)
error: failed retrieving file 'community.db' from Arch Linux ARM.com : No address record
error: failed to update community (No address record)
error: failed retrieving file 'aur.db' from Arch Linux ARM.com : No address record
error: failed to update aur (No address record)
error: failed to synchronize any databases

A little more searching demonstrated that DNS or something similar isn't working. URLs don't work (like archlinuxarm.org) but direct IPs do. The following two lines demonstrate the ping works with the IP but not with the URL google.com.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')root/]# ping -c 1 google.com
ping: unknown host google.com
[root@haiiro /]# ping -c 1 72.14.204.103
PING 72.14.204.103 (72.14.204.103) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 72.14.204.103: icmp_req=1 ttl=54 time=186 ms

--- 72.14.204.103 ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 186.986/186.986/186.986/0.000 ms

My other computers behind the router (one desktop wired, multiple wireless) are working just fine. I've looked for others having a similar problem but failed. I imagine that a DNS server needs to be setup or declared somewhere but I'm kinda surprised that it isn't working out of the box.

Does anyone have some advice?

you can manually add one via /etc/resolv.conf, but to be honest that fact that is trying to look to Arch Linux ARM.com .. how old was that tarball ?

Thanks for the quite reply.

Adding a nameserver to /etc/rc.conf as shown on the Arch Linux Wiki didn't work even with reset.

I just downloaded and reinstalled the system yesterday but it's possible that my reinstall didn't work because I did something wrong. I did have an old install from the old tarball from about the end of the Arch Linux ARM era. I'm going to have to try another reinstall to see if a fresh installation improves the problem a little.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah.. while an old tarball should get you network connectivity (and dns resolution), it will look to Arch Linux ARM.com not archlinuxarm.org

I restarted the installation from the beginning including the latest uBoot (though I may have had the latest version already)

Everything is squared away and working. Thanks!
