rpi 5 - moving from linux-rpi to linux

Postby mervinb » Mon Nov 25, 2024 10:08 am

I am running alarm on my rpi5, using the instructions https://kiljan.org/2023/11/24/arch-linux-arm-on-a-raspberry-pi-5-model-b

Now that 6.12 mainline has rpi5 support, has anyone tried:

# pacman -Syu linux-aarch64 uboot-raspberrypi

Anything that I should watch out for?

6.12 has *some* rpi5 support. A lot of stuff will not work. It's better to keep using the linux-rpi-16k kernel.

just fyi: my miniarch make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_FULL, '(', 'https://github.com/warpme/miniarch', '', ' class="postlink"')) works well for me on rpi5. kernel is current 6.12.1 mainline....

As an ex-maintainer I'm biased, but i see the question about the mainline support for RPI 5 very often. The BCM2712 and the RP1 on the RPI 5 requires a lot of work. This is much more in comparison to the RPI 4, which took roughly 4 years and still not finished yet.

I dislike the general suggestion to use the vendor kernel in case an issue occurred, because in this case the mainline kernel won't make any progress. But in the case of RPI 5, I suggest to wait at least a year until porting is mature enough. Currently most of the peripheral is not usable.
