pacman - searching for packages not installed

Postby Thor » Fri Nov 25, 2011 9:00 am

I am looking for software to install, but I can't figure out how to do that. pacman has many search options, but none of them seem to do what I want. I am searching for alternate kernels. Currently have kernel26-docstar, so I want to search for anything that starts with kernel, kernel26, and kernel30.

Thanks,
Thor

Here is the upstreams package serach: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/

Also, the 3.0+ kernel packages are now simply named 'linux' instead of kernelXX

When is the last time you did pacman -Syu?

I did pacman -Suy. Normally it is the first think I do before I do any other pacman stuff.

Seems pacman can't search uninstalled (available) packages. Seems odd.

Anyway, thanks for the link. I am good to go now.

If this happens again:
1) make sure that the correct url resides in the pacman.conf
2) pacman -Scc
3) pacman -Syy

That will make sure it is asking the right place for updates, clear it's cache, and re-sync from the server.

The kernel package you need is just called 'linux'. A pacman -Syu should have picked that up for you, but if it didn't then remove kernel26-dockstar and install linux. Though given that your system is that old, you might be better off just starting from scratch and re-extracting the v5 rootfs tarball onto the drive (backing up stuff first, of course). Systems still running pre-February 2011 versions are better off with a fresh install.
