3TB usb disk won't mount on reboot

Postby Thor » Mon Dec 19, 2011 4:17 am

I updated my dockstar about 2 days ago and now it won't mount the USB disks on boot. Never had any issues until the update. This might be the first update on this box in the past year. But not sure.

If I boot with the 3TB disk connected the system accesses the disk for about 30 minutes before it configures the network. After that I can login and manually mount the disk. I did run fsck on both disks. This did not help.

If I boot without the USB disks connected it starts just fine. If I then connect the 3TB disk, it gets accessed for about 30 minutes. However, during this time I can manually mount the disk.

Oh, during the 30 minutes of disk access, there is no fsck running. I can't determine what is accessing this disk.

Any idea what's going on for the 30 minutes?

Any idea how to fix this?

I think the file system is ext4. I don't know how to verify this. I don't even recall the tool I used to partition it. It only has one 3TB partition.

[root@nas0 ~]# cat /proc/partitions
major minor #blocks name

31 0 1024 mtdblock0
31 1 4096 mtdblock1
31 2 32768 mtdblock2
31 3 224256 mtdblock3
8 0 3915776 sda
8 1 3914752 sda1
8 16 2930264064 sdb
8 17 2930263040 sdb1
8 32 488386584 sdc
8 33 488384001 sdc1

sda is the boot disk.
sdb is the 3TB disk.
sdc is the 500MB disk.

I have not seen the same problem with the 500MB disk, but I also can't hear it when it is being accessed. So, I can't be sure. I did run an fsck on it, but could not hear or feel the disk access. I can hear and feel when the 3TB disk is accessed.

Try installing udev-automount

udev-automount helped some.

It still hangs on boot. But I don't get 30 minutes of disk I/O. I feel it might be prompting for something on the console. :(
But I don't have a console.

With the disks removed, it still boots. When I plug them in, they get mounted, without 30 minutes of disk I/O. So that's handy, but not much.
