Can "Puppy" or "Damn Small Linux" be installed on Pogoplug??

Postby strgg » Wed Dec 21, 2011 3:11 pm

Hi Community

Nice to have this forum. Indulge me and my question, i am only experienced in PHP, Perl.

Object: Pogoplug Pro
Special Features: WiFi

Goal: Install a desktop Linux Desktop Distro with Graphical UserInterface. Damn Small Linux and Puppy need only 16gb RAM and can be used with a live-USB.

Goal explained: I want the Pogo to be used as a small PC attached to my TV where i can surf the net, view Media, programm.

My experience with Linux so far: Puppy, Ubuntu, DSL install or boot from Live-USB

Questions:

Can i install "puppy" or similar on the device or is a special distro for Arm needed?
Will it be difficult to make the WiFi work on such a linux distro?
What would you recommend considering my need?

Thanks a ton for your advice and help

Greetings from Europe,

Gerome

x86 is not ARM. Simple as that.

However, the oxnas & pro will become much easier in the coming weeks/month.

@WarheadsSE

i don't understand what you mean. i am not that educated. please explain.

I want to erase the whole (arm-based)linux distro from Pogoplug Pro and than either install Puppy, Damn Small or ARM freshly. Isn't that possible?

it seems so here:
http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv6 ... provideov3

Would you recommend ARM (Is KDE possible with the Pogo) or the other distros (if that's even possible technically) for my purpose ( see "Goal explained" on the initial post)?

Thanks for your help

1) We don't "erase" the stock installation.
2) Yes, there are desktops available
3) x86 is the standard "intel" cpu architecture, which is different from ARM. Programs are the fuel, x86 is a gasoline engine, ARM is a diesel. The putting an x86 program in an ARM cpu, or vice-versa would be impossible.
4) The Pro may not have the umph to watch mp4.

The pogo doesn't have any video output
Also Puppy, and DSL are Linux distributions, as is arch (here is arch)
Google these other hardware, they have video output
Raspberrypi, trimslice, CuBox

Thanks everyone for your help so far

@WarheadSE, Point 2)
which desktop (distro) you recommend for surfing the net(firefox), viewing pdf's and using FTP and simple texteditor?
If you recommend one or two ... are there tutorials how to easy get going installing them on the plug?

Thanks again :)

desktop != distro

Desktop = window manager (kde/gnome/xfce)

And, IDK, because I havent tried any on my oxnas's

Ok thx.

I guess i will go with gnome than since it uses minimal CPU.

Is there a reason against installing puppy with gnome on pogoplug?
Ever been done so far by any user?

Why is archlinux your choice?

Thanks again :)

Puppy is not as advanced in support as us. Good luck.

i will try building on archlinux :D . Was just afraid it would be too complicated for a newbe. in puppy i can just install and go. to configure arch for my needs, i guess, additionall to this guide, ...

http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv6 ... provideov3

.. i have to continue installing gnome and the other software like on any usual archlinux configuration.

thx for your help educating a noob. i try to read and don't bother the forum too much :oops:
