buying my first plug.

Postby aphex » Tue Dec 27, 2011 7:31 am

So I want to buy a plug computer for using as a 24/7 web server. I am concerned with overheating and ease of installation. What matters to me the most is being able to have a web server that can handle php/mysql and that is about it really.

an additional question: will USB create a bottleneck on the speed of delivery out to the web? would esata be preferable? I have an external hdd that I will be plugging in so I want to make sure I get as much performance as I possibly can out of my little web server.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice.

Heat issues: Assuming you don't wrap it in duct tape, it should breathe decently in its original case.

PHP/MySQL: as long as the database stays lightweight, and the proper tweaking is done MySQL should be okay. PHP, just don't use Apache, use nginx or lighthhtpd.

Which device were you looking at for use with eSATA?

I was looking at the dreamplug or the guruplug.

I ask about heat issues because all across the plug computer forums on the web you see people complaining about overheating and having to replace power supplies.

also I had one additional question about capability. could a plug computer handle a website that had anywhere from 10-20 simultaneous users? lets say the website is a forum not much more different than this one.

Using the correct http server daemon, and proper optimizations, most likely.

Thanks for all the advice. In your personal opinion what is the best plug computer solution at this point in time? The DreamPlug seems like a pretty capable machine. There is also the D2 but not sure why the price jumps so much higher for it.

I'd get a v7 hardfloat device, personally.

Alright been looking around... is the beagle board a hard float device? Trying to find something along the lines of a plug device but I am willing to go the diy route and create my own enclosure for something like this...

What is the best plug device out there for my goals? thanks for any help.
