UBIT Noob Question

Postby Hardworking » Fri Feb 03, 2012 11:26 pm

Hello All,

Sorry to post what may seem like a Noob question, but I can't find the info I am looking for.

I (guided by a mate) setup a GoFlex Net by following the install instructions from this site and the system is working brilliantly! :) I don't have a lot of experience with Linux, but I am learning fast.

My question is though... My install was some time ago (October last year) and there no mention of the UBIT section. So I am wondering if I need to do anything to my system, and/or am I missing something vital.

This entire section below was not in the instructions I followed to get my system running. Any advice here would be great. :)

Download the U-Boot Install Toolkit (UBIT) environment
cd /tmp
wget http://jeff.doozan.com/debian/goflex/v0.6/uInitrd
wget http://jeff.doozan.com/debian/goflex/v0.6/ubit_start
chmod +x ubit_start
Start the UBIT environment where the prompt will read: ubit0-6:~#
./ubit_start
Update the U-Boot bootloader and move a copy of the OE U-Boot into unused NAND memory:
chain_install goflexnet
chain_revert
uboot_uptodate

If you set things up using the site instructions last October, you installed UBIT. There's nothing you need to do extra, that is just a U-Boot replacement. Doesn't require any user maintenance or updating.

Ahh.. so are you saying that the instructions I followed installed UBIT, but not explicitly where I would have needed to run the above commands??

It's been nearly a year since we've had any instructions posted for the GoFlex Net that didn't use UBIT. UBIT was originally conceived for the GFN. Basically, if you are (or can) boot from SATA, you're using UBIT.

Hmmm OK. Well as I said, when I did my install I didn't run those commands that I posted above. I know I didn't as I would have remembered those commands.

What made me notice this is I am helping a friend set his up, and when we got to that section I stopped, because it was different to mine.

So the question is, when did the instructions change and how do I know my system is good?? I know you say if I can boot, but not having the experience in this, I am very confused.

I built my system around October 2011. Maybe I did install UBIT but the actual steps are different. When did that change?

The steps get tweaked from time to time very slightly to avoid potential issues, reordered occasionally, but like I said the UBIT-using instructions have been the standard for about a year. Don't worry, you're fine.
