LXDE issues [SOLVED] permission problems

Postby metro » Sat Feb 25, 2012 12:54 am

Hi Guys
I am a total noob at this so be patient
So far I have installed Archlinux to my Pogo-B01, setup samba and am able to transfer files via filezilla (internal network)
I decide to install LXDE and LXDM because I could not figure out how to get midnight commander to install.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LX ... -logout.29

I am not too flash on the command line and feel I'm groping in the dark

when I try to start LXDE I get connection closed (below)
[root@alarm ~]# exec startlxde
Connection to 192.168.0.128 closed.
[laurie@localhost ~]$ ssh

Is there another step by stem guide I can follow

getting myself totally confused

thanks in advance

Laurie

EDIT:
tried again a normal user and got
[laurie@alarm ~]$ exec startlxde
cp: cannot stat `/usr/share/lxde/pcmanfm/pcmanfm.conf': No such file or directory
Connection to 192.168.0.128 closed.
[laurie@localhost ~]$ ^C
[laurie@localhost ~]$

Re: LXDE issues

OK so after hours of trying to see what I have done wrong I decided to follow this
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2293&p=13552&hilit=XFCE#p13552
I have XFCE now installed and have started vncserver
using "remmina RDC" I can access my POGO-B01 however I just get a black and grey screen
(looks a bit like fine mesh)

any help appreciated

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('metro', 'I') want to be able to ssh to my POGO and see a desktop

I don't think you get how this works. I'm not being mean.

You can tunnel X11 over ssh, even VNC over ssh. If you don't understand the performance implications of this and want to, say, use it for a web browser, etc, you're looking in the wrong direction for any of the non-v7h plugs.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') don't think you get how this works. I'm not being mean.

Thankyou WarheadsSE,
I appreciate your comments and understand you are only stating the obvious.
the problem I have is getting completely overwhelmed by the mass of information here and I have very limited experience
with Linux.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f you don't understand the performance implications of this and want to, say, use it for a web browser, etc, you're looking in the wrong direction

I would be happy to be able to see a file manager but once again limited understanding has me stumped.

thanks for taking the time

Please post the content of your vnc xstartup. There just might be something in there not quite right we can help pointing out. For your purpose of using a file manager, I think it is perfectly OK. Like WarheadsSE said, the plug is not powerful enough for web surfing. But using a browser within xfce desktop to do chores then it's more then adequate.

thanks guys
copy of xstartup
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &
')

having used Norton Commander for nearly 15 years I would be happy to just get MC to work

appreciate you taking the time

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('metro', 't')hanks guys
copy of xstartup
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &
')

having used Norton Commander for nearly 15 years I would be happy to just get MC to work

Strange, I thought you want to use xfce? I did not see xfce in there. It should looks like this

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
...

startxfce4 &
')

or this

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '#!/bin/sh
xrdb $HOME/.Resources
...
xfce4-session &')

And like pepedog has suggested, if you only wants a file manager then webmin is pretty safe and quick choice. Just install webmin, then connect remotely using web browser from your PC.

However, if you follow carefully the instruction in the second link you've posted (philoo) about xfce, it should work.

Another thought, have you tried to connect from Windows or MAC PC remote desktop (you've mentioned remmina RDC)?

I am going to re install every thing again

as a matter of interest remmina now throws the following:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'SSH password authentication failed: Access denied. Authentication that can continue: publickey,password')

and remote desktop from win XP does not connect and message is not helpful.

thanks for taking the time will report back after re-install
