[solved] Owncloud on which device?

Postby gorilla » Sun Apr 22, 2012 7:24 pm

Hello,

I'm thinking of setting up owncloud (with nginx/fastcgi) on on of the supported arm-devices, but cannot decide which one to buy...
Scince webhosting is the only purpose, I don't need any HDMI or similar... So I thought to buy a BeagleBone... Do you think it can manage this? If not, which device do you recommend?

There will be not more then 5 connections at one time to the server...

Edit: I don't want to wait for the R.pi

I've got a couple of bones, Very nice devices apart that there is no SATA, if you are happy with USB speed, go for one. Just get a doghouse for it. First thing I noticed is that it don't run very hot like the Sheeva wich I have used several of.

Really, almost any of them should be capable of it. If you are going to use SSL on a kirkwood, be sure to setup cryptodev for enhanced speed :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ykmag', '[')...]Very nice devices apart that there is no SATA, if you are happy with USB speed, go for one. Just get a doghouse for it.[...]

When I use it as a web cloud it shouldn't make a difference if I use USB or SATA or am I wrong? I have ADSL with with I think 0.6Mbps up und 2.6Mbps down... (Not even sure if this enough to serve some bigger files like movies)

Why is the Doghouse important? I only see the devices getting warmer with cases...

@WarheadsSE

Thank you, so I will have a look for the cheapest one, though I really like the beaglebone, even when I'll never use its many GPIOs...

If your upload is only 0.6Mbps, then you'll choke the pipe before the disk. You could use a USB 1.1 drive for that matter.

Thank you! That is what I wanted to read.
I'm new to this forum. Is there a way to mark this thread as solved. I couldn't find it.

Just that having open electonics laying around is a bad idea. And it really is power efficient, so it don't thing heat will be a problem.

Is it really? When I look into the Desktop-PCs of some friends, it looks like the have been open all the time, but they're working. And I thought they're much more sensivtive. Said that, I'm going to build a case for the bone :D
