LAST FEW WORDS

Postby igenyar » Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:34 pm

My last few words on this forum after a long and unsuccessful experience with GoFlex Home (dock).

This thing, from my experience, is not robust. If you follow the installation instruction, chances are high that you will screw up somewhere and it is very very very difficult to reset. During my investigation of fixing it, I have seen tons of posts such as "reflash failure", "HDD boot failure", "try different usb sticks", and "serial cable". If you are a developer, waste as much time as you like. But for ordinary users who just want to save a few bucks for setting up an NAS, it is pure stupidity.

I am not going to return this crap to the eBay seller. But I would like to share with those who still consider purchasing it. If you are not so experienced with hacking stuff, then stay away from it would be a wise choice.

Send it to me...I'll have it working in ~5 min....actually make that ~15 seconds.... I have a flash drive with a clean rootfs already on it.

I don't normally reply to posts like this but I feel it warranted.

igenyar, sorry to see you give up after 5 days working with your new GoFlex Home. I think you really are missing out on an extremely robust little linux box, capable of running more services than either of us probably know exist.

Out of box you already had a fully functional NAS with zero hacking required, it's pretty much what Pogo does. Why you decided to install Arch is unknown, but please do not blame the hardware as these are awesome devices that function very well.

Unfortunately, there is always the chance of human error when following instructions. It is also true that if things do go wrong a skill level higher then one currently has may be required to correct it. I will say from experience the documentation found here is spot on, and in most cases it really is easy to fix problems if your linux familiar.

xenoxaos is correct that the Goflex Home takes roughly 5 minutes to setup, I have done four myself. If you didn't realize the end result was a linux computer, requiring the appropriate knowledge to run and maintain, then stop now. But if you knew this going in I would highly suggest trying a little longer and learn what you need to fix your GoFlex Home as it will serve you well.
