Angstrom vs ArchLinux

Postby hstimer » Sat Sep 01, 2012 10:53 pm

I'm currently using Angstorm with BeagleBone and I'm considering a move to ArchLinux ARM. I played with Ubuntu, which is great if you need a LAMP stack, but I have very minimal needs. I'm running my own software that calls the kernel directly so I don't need a bunch libraries or applications, and I definitely don't need a GUI.

My primary needs are speed, size, and security.

Some things I like about Angstrom: systemd, busybox, bear, a very fast boot. Getting rid of the SysV script init nonsense is awesome.

How are security updates handled in ArchLinux Arm?

What is the footprint of a minimal installation? Memory, storage?

Our packages come from Arch Linux, with changes made upstream built daily here. When security issues pop up, Arch is usually one of the first distributions on the scene with a package update with either the patch or new version that addresses it.

The am33x root filesystem will take up 431MB, though with some work you can cut that down more if needed. Typical boot-time memory usage is around 10-20MB RAM, but dependent on what daemons you choose to run. We do have systemd, and although it's not the default setup, the Arch wiki provides great instructions for moving to that system.
