Root pwd for new armv5te install not "root?"

Postby OldBaldy » Sun Jan 13, 2013 7:03 pm

Just installed archlinux on a USB flash drive, intended for my old Pogoplug V2 (usb install done from a temporary usb-boot laptop, running xubuntu.)

Other than the mount issue, which I got around, everything worked great, until I tried to SSH into the pogoplug. I get the root logon menu....used "root" and "root" for password.
Access Denied!

Searched the forums and web and wiki to try to find info on the default root password and no luck.

Pls help a NOOB (anything linux is major head-scratcher for me, but am having fun learning, and trying NOT to ask silly questions without research/trying)

Thanks all!

OB

I can guarantee that the root password is 'root'

You can always look into /etc/shadow and see if the root line is as follows.

root:$1$3h5WisJ4$JbJ/AJORbUw8Mf.LtNVtp/:15286::::::

Thanks for the quick response.

I finally figured out how to check this, and yes, the "root:" line in etc/shadow file is exactly as you say.

When I ssh to my booted pogoplug using putty from a win7 client, and the pogo's IP, port 22, it provides the logon prompt.
I entered "root", to which it prompts for the password. I entered "root" again, and get the "Access Denied" message, every time.

I 100% sure I'm doing something stupid.....but what?

I did check that the IP address is correct (hopefully) by watching the dhcp clients on my LAN and seeing which device IP appears after the pogoplug boots. Is there any better way for me to check the IP (without being able to logon to the pogoplug?

Thanks again,
OB

I have a feeling it might be booting into stock.

Screenshot from my temporary xubuntu laptop (where I'm trying to ssh from)

xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ ssh root@192.168.1.105
root@192.168.1.105's password:
Permission denied, please try again.
root@192.168.1.105's password:

Is my ssh syntax correct? Sorry guys....such a linux noob!

That's right.
The stock password for root for cloud engines V2 is ceadmin

hmmm, this pogo has been running archlinux for about a year, and booting up off the flash running archlinux.
Then, recently the pgp has not been booting up properly, so I thought I'd format the flash drive and reinstall from scratch witha fresh copy of archlinux.

To check if it is ignoring the flash drive now and booting into stock OS, I removed the flash and rebooted and have the exact same issue.....access denied after entering the root password of "root"

So, I assume youre right.....it is ignoring the flash drive and I've forgotten the stock (or my previous) root password on the box. I tried "ceadmin" but that does not work.

I'd like to start all over again. I will research what to do to try to ignore the stock OS (boot loader issue?) and force it to boot from the flash as it used to do before I reinstalled Archlinux on the flash drive.

If I can find a way to get onto the box, I think I can figure it out (with a little help from my friends) - Thanks, Joe Cocker. :-)

I guess I've screwed the pooch....?

I can't ssh to the pogoplug, because I've forgotten the password.
The pogoplug stock OS is no longer working because I installed and ran Archlinux on it and ran it for a year, booting off flash drive.
It does not seem to be booting off the new flashdrive onto which I reinstalled a fresh copy of Archlinux.

Do I have any options to fi x this little pink box, or is it now toast?
