I've been using CrashPlan for a while.
A few week ago a replaced my old application server, Cubieboard 2, with Cubox-i2 and sadly CrashPlan server didn't follow my softlinks (the storage is a remote nfs mount), maybe due to the Cubox-i old kernel and the syncing of the backup archive ended with my backup deleted.
Anyway I'm tired of this proprietary software solution and looking for a more flexible service that doesn't have a client running constantly that will offer me more control.
I already got a local backup scheme set and the offsite service is at least the 3rd safety net.
My current backup archive is about 150GB which may increased to include more 1TB of media (unique like homevideos and etc) which I'll not need access to it, nor I'll update it on a daily basis.
Few services for consideration:
* backupsy.com with the 10$/250GB look like a flexible solution, the larger storage plans seems to be really cheap in comparison to other vps services but still not so dirt cheap like CrashPlan.
* Amazon Glacier is very affordable with 0.01$/1GB and it look like there are already available tools for Linux like glacier-cmd but the pricing can be a little difficult to understand and I haven't calculate how much it would cost to restore a large "vault".
* Give a PogoPlug to a family member or friend and give him the option to backup to it and to my machine.
The benefits are that no initial syncing is needed, an automated script can be written to use a usb drive as a medium for syncing when big changes are made and my upload cap would make sure that I'll not use the whole bandwidth of internet connection of the target machine.
I could also set a script to use the leds to indicate that a backup is running so there will be no confusion if internet network is unstable or slow.
The main disadvantage is security and privacy of the target network, one would not want to open his network for incoming connections (ssh or vpn) so maybe a good idea would be to have some kind of online medium service set (web storage or sync service like Dropbox) that will be used to transfer an archive with the changes (maybe created with Rsync).
* BitTorrent Sync.
I'm not thrilled of using proprietary software for backup.
What do you think ?
