Change needed for BeagleBone Black installation guide

Postby utkonos » Sat Dec 27, 2014 5:12 am

I've run through the BeagleBone Black installation instructions and run into two items that should be mentioned in the guide here:
http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv7 ... bone-black

1) Step #6, when extracting the tar archive, I got three errors for each file that was extracted:
Cannot change ownership to uid 1001, gid 1001: Operation not permitted
I believe this is a harmless error, since the file system type is vfat, and it does not support unix-style permissions and ownership. This error should be mentioned in the instructions as being harmless or the instructions should be modified to add an "-o" flag to the tar command to get rid of the ownership change in the first place.

2) In the section "installing to eMMC", the locale needs to be set on the SD card that has booted at this point. Otherwise, when one tries to extract the root filesystem tarball, there will be a set of errors like the following:
bsdtar: Pathname can't be converted from UTF-8 to current locale.
The instructions can be modified to add the instructions from the Arch Beginner's Guide here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be ... ide#Locale
Performing those steps before step #2 in the section "installing to eMMC" will avoid the errors completely.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to submit website changes, and if I'm in error, please let me know the proper location to submit this type of report.
