Youtube on raspberry pi 2?

Postby smalhan » Mon Aug 10, 2015 10:16 pm

Hi, I was wondering if anyone was able to watch youtube flawlessly on arch arm - raspberry pi 2. I know flash is unavailable for arm so I tried html page -> EXTREME lag.

I tried using midori, netsurf, and firefox, all have extreme lag.
Downloaded using youtube dl, play in VLC -> still extreme lag
I have tried with gpu ram splits of 64 mb, 128 mb, and 256 mb -> 256 is over the required amount said on other websites but it still lags.

Note: sound works perfectly

any solutions or suggestions?

Hi,

Did you solve this issue? I am planning to install Arch as a low-end desktop for me and my son. Youtube videos are one of the important features to us.

After a quick look at Raspbian, it looks like this issue exists on other distros too. I don't know if this comes from the flash player, the graphics driver or a browser port problem.

The raw hardware power of the rpi 2 should let it play these videos flawlessly.

Flash would need to have hooks to the acceleration API to make it run any faster.

I highly doubt it considering the official Rasbian image can't play back youtube videos without shuttering. I just figured if it's solvable, with the size of the Pi community it would have been solved.

I personnaly use a script that uses youtube-dl with omxplayer.

See https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... hp?t=19386 for an example.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')I was wondering if anyone was able to watch youtube flawlessly on arch arm - raspberry pi 2

I'm using chromium, works for me, no lag, and I have no flash installed.
I use an older chromium-version, because more recent chromium gave problems, have a look here:

I am using firefox which plays video flawlessly. Chromium won't start currently. And webkit-based browsers (eg. midori) are doomed.

Perhaps minitube is a solution.
Haven't tested it on the pi and right now it's not working, perhaps because it's out of date in the repos.
