cannot start gui

Postby Caberfeifh » Wed Oct 21, 2015 8:49 pm

I have been having issues running startx.

Having reinstalled arch three times and following the relatively simple instructions on-line I get stuck at the same place. When I run startx I get an error:

'only console users are allowed to run the x server'

Running startx through root fairs no better with file /root/.Xauthority does not exist.

I am a bit disappointed with raspberry pi as I found install Arch on the laptop relatively easy.

Can anyone point me in the right direction and fill in the gaps that the on-line tutorials obviously omitted. Perhaps they are out of date and not applicable for the latest apps or pi 2?

I have followed the instructions on this blog: http://blog.adityapatawari.com/2013/05/ ... -xfce.html

as well as changing user name, setting up sudo etc.

Help!!!

Ok. I have reinstalled Arch and am reasonably happy with everything apart from still only being able to login via root.

Can someone point me in the right direction to enable user login. I would rather not go blundering around and undoing all my previous work (again).

Any replies would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

see to remeber I used both adduser and addgroup. First created a group for the user name I wanted to added, then added a user with th required user name in the group just created.

I had already done the creating groups and users and in fact deleted them all and started again just to be sure.

The problem is definitely down to privileges as I can sudo startx into LXDE. As far as I am concerned I have set up the user ad group correctly and pretty much as I did previously on Arch Linux.

I have obviously mucked something else up and having repeated this process three times I am getting rather frustrated. Has anyone any idea where I should look to correct this issue?

Try this (I cannot try myself)
Add this to bottom of /home/alarm/.xinitrc
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'exec dbus-launch startlxde')
You could now start lxde logged in as alarm by running startx
