Dash in Bash is displayed as a square

Don't know what can cause this and hope this is a known issue, but the 'dash' ('minus') character (the one used to prepend command options) in man pages is displayed as a filled rectangle (almost a square) of approximately the letter 'o' size. The LANG is en_US.UTF-8. How this could be corrected?
