Samsung se-208 USB cdrom device not always detected

Postby jbt » Sun Jan 10, 2016 11:18 pm

EDIT : I changed lsusb answers. Previous ones were with slightly different configurations

I have a raspberry pi 2 Model B, with archlinux and try to connect a samsung se-208 external usb cdrom device. The device is connected to an external usb hub, self powered.

Usually, the device is not detected :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8192CU 802.11n WLAN Adapter
[alarm@archmusique app]$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8192CU 802.11n WLAN Adapter
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 059b:047b Iomega Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMC9514 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
')

After disconnecting and connecting it again, it is sometimes detected (2nd line) :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8192CU 802.11n WLAN Adapter
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 0e8d:1806 MediaTek Inc. Samsung SE-208 Slim Portable DVD Writer
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 059b:047b Iomega Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMC9514 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
')

When the device is detected I got the following (and the device works normally) :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[alarm@archmusique app]$ dmesg | tail
[ 858.267923] usb 1-1.3.3.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

[ 859.389745] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
')

In the future, the device won't be easily accessible, which means that it has to be detected always. I tried various configurations on the hub (shared with a hdd that works perfectly). Also I updated the whole system (pacman -Syuu)

I would really appreciate any help : I did 99% of my project, and everything works great, but that...

Thanks in advance.

P.S : when detected :

What is $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Bus 001 Device 007: ID 059b:047b Iomega Corp. ')

Iomega usb hard drive RPHD-UG 500 Go (I did a mistake in lsusb outputs in my original post : that device didn't disappear spontaneously)

Odd, that it is not coming up. It might indeed be due to power draw, combined.

Does this happen when the USB HDD is not attached at boot?

I just tried to boot without hdd, but it didn't change anything.

after boot :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[alarm@archmusique ~]$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8192CU 802.11n WLAN Adapter
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMC9514 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
')

after connecting back hdd :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8192CU 802.11n WLAN Adapter
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 059b:047b Iomega Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMC9514 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
')

... still no samsung

Is it possible do a reboot on an usb device (the hub, which in my case would do the trick) ?

If it is an external hub, sure. You would probably not want to do the root-hub on the Pi, because it would disconnect everything.
