Dbus wont start - Input/Output error

Postby farsheedj » Wed Feb 08, 2012 3:03 am

I am running into problem with starting avahi.I get following message

-bash-4.2# /etc/rc.d/avahi-daemon start
Start dbus first
but when i try to start dbus I get this message

-bash-4.2# /etc/rc.d/dbus start
:: Starting D-BUS system messagebus [BUSY] Failed to start message bus: Failed to open "/var/run/dbus.pid": Input/output error
Any ideas how to fix this.

Thanks

I recently updated the system by pacman -Syu. I still shows bash 4.4. Do I need to do any manual installation/upgrade.
This is the kernel/archlinux installed. Is there a more updated/different version.

I think you messed up your prompt line in your environment, that is why is is saying -bash-4.2#

to be honest, I don't know what you have done to put your system into the state it is in. There should be no such input/output error, nor should your prompt read as such. You may want to consider a full re-install.

I had some issues in my install related to the location of the various items in the rc.d file. Not sure about dependencies. In my case, I needed to move items around to get things going. My understanding is that if one daemon fails, the ones that come after fail as well.

I was having issues with avahi until I moved DBUS before avahi. This could be a red herring, I am not a guru, just a guy who bangs around.

The daemons line in my rc.conf looks as below.

DAEMONS=(ntpd syslog-ng network netfs crond sshd dbus avahi-daemon samba webmin cupsd)
