Installing a 20x4 USB LCD Display

Postby munroan » Mon Feb 27, 2012 5:56 pm

Hey Guys,

I'm running a pogoplug mobile with alarm on it right now and I'm interested in attaching a small 20x4 USB LCD display to act as a simple diagnostic display for system stats and x10 home automation info. Has anyone done any work with programmable LCD displays that could point me in the right direction? I know there are some Logitech G15 packages but they don't really make the LCD display separately. Also some assistance with a good brand for LCD display would be great.

Thanks!

Hey ykmag, thanks for the response. After doing a little bit more searching I discovered LCDproc which is a simple TCP/IP interface for the /dev/lcd (and similar) interfaces. It has a ton of support for many different LCD control boards as well.

Currently I'll be testing it out with the G15 drive to see if everything works as intended and if all goes well I'll be purchasing a crystalfontz 20x4 LCD display.

At this time I can report that lcdproc, lcdproc-g15 and g15-daemon compile (via yaourt) with out issue but I have yet to test to see if it actually works. I'll keep you in the loop if anyone is interested.

Hm keep us all posted, I'm very interested to see how this plays out. I actually have a crystalfontz 20x4 usb lcd I used with my desktop, and eventually wanted to get running with my GoFlex Net.

Hey Guys. So far I can verify that g15daemon and g15composer (the standalone logitech g15 daemon and scripting interface) work flawlessly when built manually. I actually decided to use a cheap nokia internet tablet as a display interface rather than the LCD so I won't be pushing too much farther into this. However I will say that LCDProc built flawlessly and the daemon started up properly.

For anyone looking to continue down this path, I would highly suggest looking into LCDProc (especially if you have a crystalfontz control board). They recommend crystalfontz on their website and have a great deal of documentation specifically for these boards. I had the most success building through yaourt as all of the required packages were there.

Good luck everyone and thanks for the help!
