Do I need a new stage1 for a new kernel on SATA ?

Postby Philoo » Sat Mar 17, 2012 7:42 am

I just compiled the CE kernel with a few more modules ( webcam and NFS mainly support ) available there http://ppl.ug/JxLGY1B2mlE/
I'm not sure I'll find the time and patience to setup a serial cable + network boot lab unless I absolutely have to, so I'd rather test that on sata.
I *guess* the stage1 does not have any direct interaction with the kernel again I guess it only does some HW init and hands over the control to the uboot sitting next on the non formatted partition.

Am I right ? if not how do I generate the stage1 or can some good Samaritan make one for me ?

Happy Shamrock day all !!

You are correct. You can just write the new kernel to the hard drive and as long as it's configured correctly, it will boot.

the unformatted partition contains a raw uImage, and nothing else :) Just replace that image, and you'll be fine. u-boot & stage1 are in the blocks below 2048 :geek:

The stage1, u-boot and instructions are already in WarheadsSE's existing thread ...

Good luck with your new kernel :D

When making kernels, it's really useful to have the serial cable so that you can see what's going wrong (if something goes wrong).

Well something went wrong. From the log udev loaded then the next step should have been eth0. Here nothing.

I guess I'll have to redo my serial cable (the pogopro and iconnect do not have the same pinout or at least the same spacing GRRR)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 't')he unformatted partition contains a raw uImage, and nothing else :) Just replace that image, and you'll be fine. u-boot & stage1 are in the blocks below 2048 :geek:

I stand corrected ;)

but wait it was in front of me unnoticed all this time: we're loading a WHSE-made uboot from sata. I need my serial cable NOW!!!! (ok honey after the kids are in bed tonight)
