Installing archlinux on pogoplug v4 / mobile with usb hub?

Postby gwapenut » Mon Sep 10, 2012 8:52 am

Hi
I need my only USB socket for something else. I have seen some talk of installing a different uboot on the SD card, though instructions seem patchy for this route for the mobile.

So I was wondering - can archlinux be installed on a USB key in a USB hub, so that other usb ports are available fo9r other devices?

As per Pogo Tech Support, the Mobile does support USB hubs - of course its always advisable to use self-powered ones. Since no-one seems to try booting it via an external hub (and it doesn't come with an internal one), you may want to ask this question on the forum where Uboot for plugs comes from. Using both SD Card and a USB Thumb hooked to the Hub might be a better option.

Doozan isn't "where uboot comes from", they do happen to maintain the primary uboot images that we use for kirkwood devices.

There shouldn't be any reason that the mobile wouldn't support a USB hub as far as I see immediately, but I don't have one of these devices to see what would occur. In theory, it should work. The ability of uboot (for the V4/Mobile ours is different than that from doozans, btw) to use a USB hub would be the only question.

It looks like you use different from Jeff's Uboot configs for some ARM devices. On my Dockstar Uboot was installed from Jeff's repo. ;)

For anyone who needs the USB slot on the PP-mobile for something else, I can confirm that it boots OK from a USB hub. This might give you some breathing space until we're sure the version that boots from SD can be safely flashed on the PP-mobile.

From what I can tell, there is a way but it is not very well supported at all so I thought it safest to just add an unpowered hub, which works fine, adds minimal clutter, and doesn't leave me with a bricked pogoplug.

It boots just fine off a USB hub, but I do have intermittent issues with a WIFI adapter in a USB hub.
YMMV.

You might need a self powered usb hub.

Check this post http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,7477,10982#msg-10982 to see how I installed MMC booting UBoot on Pogo Mobile.
