ZyXEL NSA320 booted from USB...once!

Install Arch Linux ARM on other devices.

Very good info about the uboot not being touched. I'll dig up a smaller drive (I wondered about the 4k sector size, but I don't have a spare drive at hand, and since I heard the device works w/ 3GB drives, I figured it was probably okay), and if that doesn't work, I'll get a debug terminal set up. I'll be back sometime in the next week.

Re: ZyXEL NSA320 booted from USB...once! [solved]

Postby CharlesB » Sat Sep 22, 2012 3:00 am

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 't')ry a smaller disk (in the event the 4K sectors are messing with it)

That was it! I fed it a 320GB drive, and it happily booted.*

*There's absolutely no network traffic coming from it (Wireshark was blank for half an hour) so either it's not booting successfully or it's not configured to use DHCP by default. If I don't find any answers to that one in existing posts, I'll create a new topic.

Just trying to sort out the unsolved "one-boot wonder" mystery in my mind...
Since it booted the 1st time from the USB key, but never again, I assume that when the installer changed the bootloader to boot from the hard drive, it made in unable to boot from other sources. It would be reasonable to assume that it changed the *order* of devices, and whereas the USB was first, the hard drive is now checked first, and the drive is a kiss of death, previously avoided because it found something to boot in the USB slot. However, it also doesn't boot from USB with *no* drive in there, so maybe having no drive is also the kiss of death... :-/ I could clear this new drive and then see if I can boot from USB again with it inserted, but...no, no time to be playing now. I'm in the middle of cleaning up a huge mess at work (created by someone else), have had almost no sleep the last two nights, and am heading into my 4th day. Maybe I'll do the "extra credit" investigations later...

Get back to me when you are ready, it's never a brick :P Might just be something amiss. A serial console (Rs232/TTL 3.3v) always solves ;)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'A') serial console (Rs232/TTL 3.3v) always solves ;)

Excellent suggestion. At the same time I went looking for a smaller drive, I went ahead and ordered a Bus Pirate. (I had a couple of USB-RS232 converter cables for programming ham radios, but both of them were 5V output, and since I already didn't know what I was doing, I didn't want to introduce yet another variable by hacking a simple voltage divider for it. I decided that instead of buying another cheap cable, I might as well get something that would be more generally useful. The BP is a great device!)

I finally stole a few minutes tonight to figure out the correct hook-up & operation, and was rewarded with a terminal!

Just for reference, here's what happens when I put the 3TB drive in:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Reset IDE:
Marvell Serial ATA Adapter
Integrated Sata device found
[0 0 0]: Enable DMA mode (6)
Device 0 @ 0 0:
Model: ST3000DM001-9YN166 Firm: CC9C Ser#: W1F050R8
Type: Hard Disk
Supports 48-bit addressing
Capacity: 764436.4 MB = 746.5 GB (1565565872 x 512)

Failed to mount ext2 filesystem...
** Bad ext2 partition or disk - ide 0:1 **
## Booting image at 02000000 ...
Bad Magic Number
')
It correctly ID's the type, but assumes that it has 512-byte sectors instead of 4k, which doesn't work out so well for it...

I was already used to the idea that -- at least for now -- I'll need to have a smaller drive as the primary, and might be able to add the 3TB as the secondary, so I'll go with that.

It boots fine with the 320GB drive. Just for reference, here's the complete boot-up session log:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '

"link is not ready" meaning it's not able to establish a physical-layer connection? Makes sense, since I can see absolutely no Ethernet traffic coming from it. Looking at the Ethernet jack, the top light is on and flashes, but the bottom one isn't (but I don't know the meaning of that light).

Needs parted

Postby CharlesB » Tue Sep 25, 2012 3:20 pm

I think it would be appropriate for me to move the networking issue to a new thread. I'll comment further here on "big drive" issues, since that was the cause of the boot problem.

Noticing that U-Boot has a USBBOOT command, I wondered if I could have just typed that blind to get it to boot from the USB key [that it booted from once].
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'NSA320>> usbboot
** No boot device **
NSA320>> ')
Nope!

Still looking for a diversion from the Ethernet problem (and maybe a success), I went ahead and put the big drive in the 2nd bay; unfortunately, Arch only came w/ (s)fdisk, not parted, so it can't manipulate the big disk until I install that (which will be easier to do once the network comes up). Hmmm, though the existing partitions show in /dev, I can't mount them, either:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@alarm ~]# mount /dev/sdb1 /bmnt/b1

Yeah, gparted/gdisk are in the repos and will solve that problem. What kind of switch is it attached to? We've seen issues with some switches/routes with switches.

Interesting, I installed parted, and while it correctly recognized the size of the drive and was able to see the partitions (MSDOS partition table), when I put the drive in with a gpt table (I didn't immediately see how to properly specify the start/end of the disk to create a partition in parted -- been a while -- so I just cheated and used gparted on another system), it wasn't able to recognize it! $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Error: /dev/sdb: unrecognised disk label

Disk /dev/sdb: 3001GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B
Partition Table: unknown
Disk Flags:
')It's not an old version of parted -- in fact, it's newer than the one that I used to partition the disk -- so it fully supports gpt. Odd.

I went ahead and re-did it with parted, and it worked just fine!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@alarm ~]# df -h
