Sorry I forgotten to say I am using the "sudo su" command as stated in the instructions.

What could possibly be wrong?
Is it possible to test the usb drive in a virtual environment so I can say for definite what the problem is?

You may want to look into installing new u-boot and activating netconsole from it. Netconsole may work in the old bootloader as well, but i dont know this for sure. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3355 you'll need squeezplug for this
