latest firmware CRASHES RP1

Anyone else having this problem??

sd card is sandisk ultra 32Gb.

Of course the OS is the archHF which was up to date until running the update today!

System was working fine until I did an update today. Reboot after the update and massive crash! System wont even boot, as if everything in the .boot directory is missing. Looked at the /boot directory on my laptop and everything is there. Copied the kernel files from a backup to the drive and boot from it. Boots fine but no MODs loading. run pacman -Syu which updated the kernel and reboot and the system comes right up minus all needed mods but the wired either net works, wireless does not! Do a modprobe r8712u which loads the wireless mod but wireless fails to work!

There is no modifications to the rpi, it is as it was when shipped. I know it's getting the required power as it is running off of a powered USB hub and the test points show the full 5 volts. And yes before rebooting I always run the sync command(even though you shouldn't have to)

So any ideas what in the ---- is going on here!

Unfortunately I have lost about 72hrs of programming work since I can't boot this thing. Yes I have an image file of it but it does not include all the programming I've done since the last dd backup!

Did you kill the SD card? If not, it should be readable from anywhere to get a copy of those source files.

Here's the firmware that crashed the system:
raspberrypi-firmware-20121120-1

And yes I am sure everyone except newbs now it is a community supported OS.

NO need to post this over and over again in every post that is posted to the board!

Yes it did kill the ext4 partition.
I have since re-imaged the sd with a dd img I made 2 days ago, but unfortunately that does NOT recover my lost work for the past 2 days.

It takes quit some time to dd a backup of the sd every time an update is pushed. The only time I have problems is when a new firmware update is pushed out.

I think I will no longer be installing updated firmware since the system works just fine with the existing firmware. AT least until the dev can figure out what is causing the problems.

Sorry to hear this has happened.
I don't just get it built, I build it here (kernel and firmware), install it on my own rpi and test. If it's all ok, I place on the github where the builder picks it up. I really do take care doing this.
I think next image is going to be ext3
Do you sync before reboot?
If you had a spare card with system on, and a card reader, you might be able to repair the fs

pepe, not blaming you for this. I know things happen, after all I'm a dev also but most likely not at the level that you are. Most of my dev experience is for windows. I'm now playing around with the rpi so I can use the gpio pins. The work that was lost can be recreated with time.

I'm just wondering why it crashes the system. Is it something with my system setup or is something else going on.
here's what's in cmdline.txt
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', ' smsc95xx.turbo_mode=N dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 kgdboc=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 loglevel=2 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 rootwait')

And here's what's in config.txt
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '#
uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
#hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
#hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)
#hdmi_group=1
#hdmi_mode=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
#hdmi_drive=2

# uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or
# no display
#config_hdmi_boost=4

# uncomment for composite PAL
#sdtv_mode=2

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
#arm_freq=800

# for more options see http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt
')
Any ideas?

RPI is model B with a sandisk Ultra 32Gb sd card being powered by a powered usb hub and that hub also has my wireless keyboard/mouse(only one dongle for both) plugged into it. I also have a DLink micro wireless adaptor plugged into the other rpi usb port.

And yes I run sync before rebooting.

I don't want to answer in 2 places, just here.
We haven't got to the bottom of the problem, is one or both partitions affected? You can plug into a windows machine and examine the fat one. While there rename kernel and then rename emergency kernel so it boots from that.
In that mode you can e2fsck the ext4 partition
I think what's at the bottom of this is your particular card, with your particualar rpi, and an ext4 file system.
Don't see floods of people having issues with this firmware

At first it just wouldn't boot, so I copied over the entire fat partition(files) then booted the pi and it worked, but the mods wouldn't load. So I did another pacman -syu and left the system update all over again. Reboot after the update finished and it wouldn't boot again but this time it also wiped the ext4 partition.

Now like I saidit is a SanDikUltra 32Gb class 10 sd.
Then I took my spare which will be used in the 512 rpi model which is supposed to be delivered on 11/26. I used this card in the rpi I have now and it worked fine but it is a different model, it is SanDiskExtreme 32Gb class 10. I ran pacman -Syu with the extreme sd card and all went fine with no problems.

Went back to the Ultra sd card after re-imaging it with my dd created backup, then ran pacman -Syu and excluded the firmware this time, rebooted and everything is working fine. And as a test I copied all files from the boot partition to my laptop. Then reinserted the Ultra sd back into the rpi booted and ran pacman -Syu, the only thing that installed was the firmware. Rebooted, nothing but a black screen. Copied all the files back to the boot partition and rebooted again and all is fine. This is how I determined that it was in fact the firmware that is causing the problem.

So as of right now the rpi is running with the Ultra sd card without the latest firmware update.

Now I don't know if it is the sd card itself that has the problem or if it is a config problem as stated before.

Also I posted to both websites hoping that you would see it since you were able to help with previous problems I was having.

I'll be happy to work through this with you if we can. The Ultra sd card was purchased band new and never used in any camera or anything else for that matter.

I've run fsck on it since copying all the boot files back to the boot partition and both the fat and ext4 partitions checked out fine. As I stated previously the previous firmware works like a charm, but when I install the latest firmware update it crashes the system.

Thanks for your response to this problem. I'm going to be on the road for a couple of hours around 11 AM east coast time in the US.

This worries me, when you say firmware, do you mean packages linux-raspberrypi AND raspberrypi-firmware?
They are a pair, definitly the latest have to be done together
