Pogo V4 A101 Mobile Hardware Mods?

Postby PBear » Fri Aug 23, 2013 2:06 pm

I just ordered a couple and doing some reading before they arrive. I've seen people adding a serial connection but has anyone added a second USB or SATA port? Will I be able to boot through a USB hub? Thanks.

Haven't seen anyone add a SATA port. Extra USBs on other devices are just internal hubs (except the USB 3.0 on the series 4). You can boot with a hub.

I'll break out the iron. I'm thinking it just needs to be populated, the serial dump is showing a SATA device per mlitke's post here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2284&start=14

I have added SATA to Pogoplug Mobile V4 A01. Components that need to be installed are:
- Four coupling capacitors C5-C8 , value is 10nF , case size 0402 or 0201 (located near SATA connector). Value is not critical. My guess is anything from 3.3nF up would work.
- 0 Ohm jumper resistor at the position R206 ,case size 0402 or 0201 (located near USB connector and electrolytic cap)

I did not bother to buy a 22 pin male SATA connector. Instead I took a spare red SATA cable, cut one of the connectors off and soldered it directly to the board . Pin #1 key should be connected where the middle of 22 pin connector would be on the board.
Once you strip SATA shield off , you will see four coax lines. Solder them to respective SATA signal lines on PCB. Again, the sequence is such that the key would be in the middle of the bar of bare pads for 22pin connector.
I scraped off some solder mask next to USB connector and soldered down the shield of SATA cable there. Make sure you put some Scotch tape to protect the PCB components from shorting out.
Then I took a spare Molex to SATA power adapter, cut off Molex and 12 Volt( yellow ) wire and attached remaining 5V red wire and ground black wire to power bus of USB . 5V was fed from the fuse F2.

Next you connect a 2.5" SATA drive and you are good to go.
The drive is recognized and you can see it in the output of dmesg command.

I have not taken a picture before I glued the cable down. This one shows at least where required SMTs are

I am sure you can enable second SATA channel as well in a similar way ( My guess is R213 is the jumper to install but I have not buzzed it yet) . The problem is second SATA channel is not routed and you would have to solder cable to test points next to 88F6192 on the back side of the board. Since 88F6192 supports port multiplier I do not think anybody would be interested in that.
