transmission file errors

In the last few weeks, i've started having problems with the files i download using transmission

journalctl message is:
transmission-daemon[3788]: [21:33:55.941] <FILE> Piece 495, which was just downloaded, failed its checksum test (torrent.c:3251)


In the transmission GUI, if i force a verification of local data it finds that about ~40% of the file needs to be re-downloaded.

any ideas???

I've had this happen before, but only when downloads went to a samba share. Fixed it with using local storage, or rather setting transmission to download locally before it finishes and then copying things to a samba share.

figured it out.
harddrive either going bad or partition otherwise screwed. using a different harddrive or USB key fixed it.
but now of course everything on my drive was toasted.
