I just built a 2013.10 u-boot, which has SATA+ext4 support, for my PogoPlug Pro. I'm a novice when it comes to u-boot, so I really couldn't advise you about it.
Speaking to the OXNAS, moving forward, we might be able to support it again, however, we'll have to change the u-boot on the device to support the additional feature set.
Speaking to other platforms, it depends on the available u-boot image.

Just make a small boot partition that holds the kernel which is ext3/ext2. The partition can be as small as ~20Mb. The rest of the system can be whatever filesystem you like.
