Cannot ssh unlock dropbear_initrd_encrypt

I read the post https://gist.github.com/pezz/5310082 and got my drive encrypted but I simply cannot get the remote unlock thing to work. On Putty (in Windows) it tells me that the server refused my key and then asks for the password of root. When trying ssh from my Arch desktop it just asks for the root password directly. I have tried every tutorial I could find on getting my public key into that root_key file correctly but nothing has worked. How can I get this working, isn't there a way that I can just define a login password instead of the key mechanism?

Every peice of documentation states very simply to place the public key file (id_rsa.pub) as /etc/dopbear_root_key.
Hence:
cp - copy
id_rsa.pub - public key file
/etc/dropbear_rookey - dropbear root (public) key file.

Ok for some reason after copying my key again it has started working.
