Goflex Home, where da brains at?

Postby anonman » Sat Sep 20, 2014 4:19 pm

Just picked a "Seagate Goflex Desk USB 3.0 External Drive Enclosure" for $6.60 off amz it says it's is usb 3.0 w/power supply included, so worst case it's the cheapest 3.0 enclosure around. Ideally I'd like to get arch on this, it originally came with the 1gb network dock ($35) the ? is are the brains in the enclosure so I can plug it into my routers usb 3.0 and do arch from there, or is the dock required?

The Goflex "home" has the brains, it looks like you got the brainless part.

Any thoughts on the arch-ability of these docks "Seagate GoFlex Desk Desktop Adapter - USB 3.0 STAE106" vs the
"Seagate GoFlex Net Share Media STAK100"

The usb adapter has no CPU, therefore no capacity for Arch Linux. The goflex "net" has an Armv5 cpu and is one of the supported devices listed under "platforms" on the front page of the site http://archlinuxarm.org

Thanks for your help, the goflex net/home/desk tough to tell what's what, "GoFlex Net has two 2.5-inch SATA hard drive bays STAK100" (edit) That leaves me one way to get this arched, any thoughts on if this has the horsepower to run plex?

I had a pogo4.3.1/plex'd but never long enough to tell if it was workable, as far as I can tell I would pacman -Syu myself out of existence at some point (http://iterativecode.com/blog/2012/07/2 ... -2-16-0-2/) and then I made a full brick when I attempted to update uboot and instead ubooted it into the cornfield..

Looks like the 3.5" will fit, nice..

Somebody on the forums already suggested that you need to mod it to get 12v line to 3.5 drive. 2.5 only uses the 5volt. Without the mod the drive will fit without the plastic cover but won't spin up.

We have a plex package in the repos. It doesn't do transcoding, so as long as you have the files in the native mode for the device that is to watch them it works fine. I have it running on the GF net at my dad's house. It streams just fine. I put everything into h264 mp4 packages with AAC audio and it works fine on my roku and my ipad.

I had a pogo v4.3.1 up and running with plex multiple times but it would always fall apart and stop booting. I suspect it was the glibc issue since it happened multiple times on various drives and seemingly randomly. Unfortunately when I though I had it figured out I started again from scratch and got over ambitious and tried to update uboot to the sdcard bootable version. Which seemed to be working great, no errors for the nand erase/flash part of the process but the "Update uBoot Environment Parameters" part was a total fail, everyone returned an error and I'm not familiar enough with that stuff to fix it by hand, so fingers crossed that the defaults would work I rebooted, wrong, no booty, no sshy, all bricky..

Yeah I've run into that before, my current enclosure has it's own power and esata so my fallback is a "SATA to eSATA Transition Cable" which I don't see why it wouldn't work, anyone disagree?
