Cant get installation to work (Zyxel 325v2)

Postby Jakodns » Sun Dec 28, 2014 1:41 pm

Edit: New problem, more info in my latest post

Hello since i saw the zyxel 325v2 for a really cheap price i decided to buy it and then install linux on it (Would have preferd debian, but seems like ar ch is my only option :P), but i cant get it to work so I am here looking for help :)

The problem is that when i follow the instructions from http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5/zyxel-nsa325 and arrive at step 6. I wait awhile and then try to go into the IP of the NAS (192.168.2.184), and it still loads up the stock zyxel.

The HDD is a WD red 2TB that i bought and plugged into the left HDD slot in the NAS (slot 1 if you look at the markings on the NAS).

Root directory of my USB looks like this http://puu.sh/dMtCR/d382646443.png (And yes i plug it into the front plug) I have tried with fat32 and exfat. (I have tried with a few different setups with the files here)

The HDD i have plugged into my computer and there are no partitions on it so it should be completely bare/empty

The NAS is on version 4.7.

I am very grateful for any help i can get

Left when looking from infront of the NAS or when looking from behind?

Also there are no partitions on the HDD

Edit: Plugged the USB into a rear port, lights are blinking and my hopes are going up. Will edit/update when they stop flashing

Edit2: Lights are still flashing, I take this as a very good sign.

Edit3: system light is now yellow and the rst of the lights are dead/flashing super quickly once in awhile? Is this a good or bad sign?

Edit4: ***** is working yo. SSH'd into the box without any problems, aperently i was stupid (dyslexia<- Blaming it on that) and understood rear as front usb port and not back. That was the problem all along.

New problem...

Installed everything and started to install plex on it, but needed to move the NAS to its permanent location (same network still), but after i plugged it out i realised SSH isen't on autostart? Now I cant reach it anymore via SSH or telnet, any ideas how to fix it? But I can see the server on my router and it is assigned an IP

Unless you changed something ssh will autostart. Can you move the drive somewhere and check it?

If you plug in a usb keyboard, you can login and type blind.
My NSA320 has troubles with the ethernet coming up, I do that and poweroff. Unplug power for 5 seconds and it comes up.

Ugm, *****?

I didn't read any of the replies here and just decided ***** it i'll pull the HDD and the usb and do it all over again. The blue LED on the NAS is lighting up but nothing else is working, no HDD sound, the power button doesn't work. Basicly I am sure i bricked it

Edit: Seraching around i seem to need to get a USB->TTL converter for serial connection to unbrick it. Can I somehow use a arduino uno to do that convertion? I also got a one of http://www.usbgear.com/images/DB9PMF3FT11.jpg those (using for configuring routers/switches) with a serial->USB if that helps

My ghetto UNO setup works, I am in "U-Boot" and I will see if i can work this out.

Look at the script that sets arch up. It will give a clue on partitioning, formatting, and extracting a rootfs. Then you do it manually on another Linux system

Pfft that would have been to easy :P

I ended riping everything up and doing a ghetto converter with my arduino uno and doing run_to_stock and doing everything over again while monitoring over serial. Now everything is working as it should be...... for now....

When I did mine, I did the conversion, and it booted up. Then, like you I started installing stuff ( before I did a reboot). I ended up having to partition manually and extracting the rootfs. Its been fine since. ( though it seems after each pacman -Syu it takes a hard reboot or two before it comes up that first time). I suspect that making changes to the system before that first reboot may cause some problems.
I normally do the system upgrade about monthly, and I've got something like 5 or so months on it without troubles.
