New Here - What Exactly Are Clusters?

Postby cachedrive » Thu Dec 24, 2015 2:34 am

I see from some people w/ clusters are Raspberry Pi's and I was wondering if I could buy x4 Raspberry Pi's, what exactly is their role when I see them clustered? Are they all running together to provide more processing power for a single function or do each pi node have their own role and run/work independently of the other pi's in the group? I was just really interested to see if it's possible to link or chain several pi's together to get better performance/resources.

Are there specific examples of how I can cluster x2 or more Pi's? I see many configurations w/ multiple Pi's and I'd like to cluster my two units together however lack of scheduled software and framework.

I think specifically what you're looking for is a Beowulf cluster:

which has some relevant links..

If you have a couple hundred thousand of them, you could even try making your own brain ;)
